Slip-and-falls: what they are and how to prevent them

On Behalf of | Oct 25, 2024 | Personal Injury

Slip-and-fall accidents can happen anywhere, but they are particularly concerning in rural or small-town areas. With fewer resources for maintaining public spaces and a greater reliance on the local small business community, the risk of encountering dangerous conditions that can lead to a slip-and-fall can increase.

Common causes of slip-and-falls

In rural areas, slip-and-fall accidents usually stem from:

  • Weather like rain, snow and ice can create slippery surfaces.
  • Gravel roads, unpaved walkways or poorly maintained sidewalks.
  • Lack of adequate lighting, common in rural places, makes it difficult to see.
  • Public areas have suffered neglect because of a lack of resources.

Preventing slip-and-falls

Let’s discuss how we can prevent slip-and-falls. We all know that accidents are sometimes unavoidable, but sometimes knowing what puts you at a higher risk and not doing those things can help prevent one from occurring.

You are doing this to protect yourself physically and legally. If you encounter dangerous conditions and slip-and-fall, you may have the right to seek compensation.

  • Wear appropriate shoes. For example, in water, snow or ice, ensure your shoes have good traction and avoid wearing flip-flops or shoes with smooth soles, even if you’re going out to the driveway to pick up the mail. One wrong move is all it takes; without protection, you can slip and fall. Look at the weather before going out.
  • Always pay attention to your surroundings, especially the ground you are walking on. Be careful with uneven surfaces and loose gravel. Report any hazards that you notice to the authorities.
  • Always use handrails to help support your balance when available.
  • Inside your home, keep the floors free of clutter, clean up any spills or messes promptly, and secure any rugs you may have with a rug pad, double-sided carpet tape or rug grippers.

Slip-and-falls are common accidents, and we cannot always prevent them. However, we can protect ourselves and decrease the chances of slipping.

By being vigilant and taking preventative measures, like checking the weather before going out, we can contribute to a safer environment for ourselves, our neighbors and our communities.
